Building a Family Legacy with Jim Soukup

On the latest episode of Behind the Business, Founders in the 605, Marcus and Alexis Mahlen sit down with Jim Soukup, president of Soukup Construction.

Founded in 1963 by Jim’s parents, Carl and Marietta, Soukup Construction started in Scotland, South Dakota after the couple purchased a bulldozer and pickup truck. Today, the company is headquartered in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and does a variety of projects including site preparation for small and large buildings, earthwork for highway and urban streets, and demolition of buildings, pavements, houses and bridges.

Jim discusses working in the family business for as long as he can remember and balancing college life with work until his father gave him the reigns with the company shortly after he graduated college. He discusses learning how to make mistakes in his new role, navigating how to be a leader, and living up to the big shoes his parents left for him to fill.

Decades later and dozens of projects completed around eastern South Dakota, Jim discusses his own succession plan for the company.
