Investing With Intention | with Todd Ernst
On the latest episode of Behind the Business, Founders in the 605, Marcus and Alexis Mahlen sit down with Todd Ernst, founder of Ernst Capital Group. Ernst Capital is a South Dakota-based real estate investment firm that connects investors with quality local real estate projects.
Todd grew up in the suburbs of Washington, D.C., and had an early interest in computer programming and decided to attend Purdue University to study Civil Engineering. He had a few career changes after graduating, including working for the federal government banking with the FDIC, which led him to pursuing an MBA and discovering a passion for private equity and venture capital.
In this episode, Todd explains how he began his business in 2007 after moving to Sioux Falls with his wife, how the recession impacted his new business, and how he learned to bring in partners to help him expand the business into new markets. Though Ernst Capital has changed and has had to navigate obstacles, Todd says the core principles he established from the start have helped shape and define his business over the past 19 years.
Today, Ernst Capital Group operates in seven different markets and focuses on raising capital for multi-family housing developments.
