Spin Cycle of Success | with Jon Schemmel
On the latest episode of Behind the Business, Founders in the 605, Marcus Mahlen sits down with Jon Schemmel, founder of Tidewater Companies and SBL Ventures, which is a firm focused on acquiring and operating laundromats across the Midwest.
Originally from Mississippi, Jon grew up watching his dad own and operate his own laundromat. After attending Mississippi State to study engineering, Jon spent years working across the country and in Brazil in corporate supply chain and P&L, before moving to Sioux Falls to be closer to his wife’s side of the family.
In the episode, Jon explains how he began SBL Ventures by purchasing a couple of laundromats, how much of operating a business is just “figuring it out as you go”, and how he learned to buy back his time in order to scale. Today, SBL Ventures has 19 locations in the Upper Midwest, and Jon has stepped back from CEO and works as a board chairman. As a man with multiple business ventures operating at once, he ends the episode by sharing his thoughts on the future of business opportunities in the growing Sioux Falls market.
