Leaps of Faith and Landmark Wins with Jeff Scherschligt
On the latest episode of Behind the Business, Founders in the 605, Marcus and Alexis Mahlen sit down with Jeff Scherschligt of Pendar Properties.
Jeff Scherschligt was born and raised in Sioux Falls and went to college in New York City to study insurance. After graduating, he moved back to Sioux Falls to work with his father, who was a leader and part owner of Howalt+McDowell insurance company. Jeff became president of the company in 1984 when he was 29 years old and grew the company significantly before he sold it in 2012 to Marsh McLennan Agency.
Over the years, Jeff dabbled in real estate and purchased the old Zip Feed Tower in Downtown Sioux Falls, which was the tallest building in South Dakota at the time and has since been written into state history for its “booming” demolition story. Jeff went on to form Pendar Properties, which is known for iconic Sioux Falls developments like the Cherapa buildings, the Carpenter Building, and Railyard Flats.
Jeff explains how unconventional and questionable real estate purchases led him to his success today, and even where the name “Cherapa” came from.
