The Business of Broadcasting | with Dean Sorenson

The Business of Broadcasting with Dean Sorenson

On the latest episode of Behind the Business, Founders in the 605, Marcus Mahlen sits down with Dean Sorenson of Sorenson Broadcasting.

Dean Sorenson’s career in radio began with a part time job at a Rapid City radio station he found to help get him through college. By age 22, he was managing his first radio station. In 1971, after a few years of managing a Pierre, South Dakota radio station, he founded Sorenson Broadcasting with his friend-turned-business partner Jerry Simmons.

Over the years, Sorenson Broadcasting bought and built radio stations that were deeply connected to the South Dakota towns they broadcasted to through advertising with local businesses, community engagement and fundraisers, and news reporting.

Dean discusses how he built his broadcasting company and how the industry changed over his decades-long career, before he sold his company and officially retired in 2023.
